ASC Grow the Vertical North American Building and Construction Research Study

ASC Grow the Vertical North American Building and Construction Research Study

Grow the Vertical - Voice of the Customer Research" focused on: North American Building and Construction

Adhesive and sealant market opportunities in roofing, vertical wall, interior finishes and below grade waterproofing.

Program background:

For 2019 and beyond, ASC selected the Building & Construction (B&C) Market segment to further its strategic initiative of influencing and engaging members of the construction industry and stimulating growth for its members. This effort is part of the ASC long range plan (section 5) to accelerate adoption of adhesives and sealants solutions and help minimize barriers to market growth. ASC will identify and engage specific targeted segments of end users to increase the adoption of adhesives and sealants.

The Building & Construction Market was chosen for several reasons including:

  • B&C activity within residential and nonresidential building types in the US is expected to realize a CAGR of 2.8% and a value of US $832 billion by 2023
  • Total activity (including manufacturing and infrastructure) will see annual growth of 2.7% to a value of US $1,802 billion during the same period
  • Buildings account for 40% of energy consumption in the US and the Department of Energy (DOE) is targeting a 25-35% reduction of building energy usage by 2035
  • Together, this confluence of trends indicates great opportunities for adhesives and sealants to 1) replace mechanical solutions in the B&C space and 2) considerably contribute to energy savings and provide long product service life

Program Approach & Objective:

Ducker Worldwide utilized a multi-faceted approach, incorporating 83 in-depth primary interviews with key stakeholders as well as leveraging internal knowledge base in building materials.

The overarching objective of this qualitative and quantitative study is for Ducker Frontier to define for ASC and its members the top two of the four areas within the B&C space studied (vertical walls, roofing, below grade waterproofing, interior finishing) that offer the best market growth and end-user exposure opportunities for adhesives and sealants. The study further identifies the best opportunities to displace mechanical fasteners, market education opportunities and how ASC can connect the value chain to the end user.

Next Steps:

ASC will be forming a Task Force in 2020 to utilize this research to discuss with ASC members where we should further focus our efforts, where opportunities exist to displace mechanical fasteners, and which trade associations we should approach as education partners in this key market. Additionally, we will elicit feedback to help select key applications for growth opportunities.

This report is the beginning phase of multi-year work on growing the industry. During the Ducker interviews and desktop, the report weighted towards roofing and vertical wall vs. below grade and interior finishes due to fragmentation and the lack of a true replacement for adhesives or sealants.

Ducker Frontier will also define specific application trends and performance dynamics to assess adhesive and sealant growth and development potential.
