Largest Order Placed for Volvo Electric Trucks - Adhesives & Sealants Critical Role
The truck division of Swedish automaker Volvo announced that it had received the largest commercial order to date for its heavy-duty electric trucks. Additionally, in the first quarter of 2023, Volvo received a 141% jump in orders for its electric trucks overall.
Switzerland-based building materials giant Holcim agreed to buy up to 1,000 Volvo FH and FM electric trucks by 2030. The deal — part of a larger pact between the companies — will provide electric transportation options throughout Holcim’s European network. The initial Volvo electric trucks are scheduled to be delivered to Holcim this year; 130 trucks will be deployed between 2023 and 2024. Holcim officials said the first vehicles would go to France, Germany, Switzerland, the U.K., and other markets.
Volvo officials added that replacing the typical routes of 1,000 of the company’s conventional diesel FH models with its electric counterpart would save an estimated 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Adhesives and sealants play an important role in the advancement of vehicle electrification technology and will remain at the forefront of the development of hybrid (HEV) and battery electric (BEV) vehicle battery cells, modules, packs, and motors. Battery technology in cars and trucks today have been adapted from consumer electronics.
In order to meet the more stringent requirements of the automotive industry, battery makers need to find ways to achieve a 12 to 15-year vehicle life while operating at extreme temperatures and enduring the shock and vibration generated from on and off-road driving and commercial transport loads. Adhesives and sealants play a significant role in meeting these challenges in many BEV and HEV powertrain applications.
